The government is well aware of the important role of vocational education and has already taken several important initiatives in this area. School-based vocational education in India is currently covered by a centrally sponsored scheme

that was proposed in 1988 and aimed to provide an alternative to the pursuit of higher academic education. One of the objectives of the Vocational Education Program of UPSOSB is to meet the requirement of skilled and medium level manpower for the growing sectors of the economy, both organized and unorganized. The range of vocational education courses has been expanding over the years depending on the needs of the learners and the demands of the market. The current vocational education courses of UPSOSB are for both urban and rural areas.
